Mangaluru, Apr 9: Chairman of the Gujarat Haj Committee and BJP minority morcha leader Sufi M K Chishty said that Muslims themselves were victims of terrorism, which is more often wrongly portrayed as stemming from the teachings of Islam.

Speaking at a media conference here on Thursday, Mr Chishty said that because of the stereotyping of Muslims as terrorists, they had become victims. It is stated in the Quran that a human being killing another person is equivalent to killing the entire humanity. Terrorism including suicide bombings, is strongly against the principles of Islam. It is also stated in the Quran that a Muslim falls outside the realm of Islam if he engages in terror activities. It is sad that the teachings in Quran and Hadees propagated by Prophet Mohammed centuries ago have been misinterpreted and misrepresented by extremists, which has contributed to the distortion of the meaning of Islam. But, there is no connection between Islam and terrorism, he stressed.

Sufism promotes humanity

Noting that people belonging to the Sufi sect still believed in humanity and brotherhood and stood firm by the real teachings of Islam, he pointed out that not a single person from the Sufi community had become a terrorist.

Speaking on the beginning of stereotyping of Muslims, he said that the roots of this stereotyping could be traced back to the World War II era when the British tried to promote “extremists” such as Muhammed ibn Abdul Wahhab and gradually the US supported the Mujahideen tribes to overthrow the Russian Army from Afghanistan to gain wealth, power and oil. The ones who supported the extremists are also equally responsible for the rise in terrorism. Extremism is nothing but criminalism in religious garb, he said.

Modi controlled Muslim extremism

When asked about the controversial issue of ghar wapsi in several states in the country, Mr Chishty said that the BJP had no connection with love jihad and ghar wapsi, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also clarified this. When the administration of Gujarat was in the hands of Modi, he had exercised control on both Muslim extremism and Hindu extremism in the state, he said, adding that Modi had also opposed extremism from Hindutva leader Pravin Togadia.

Chishty said that extremism ideology was dangerous and a threat to the entire world. Youth turning to terrorist organisations should be taught that Islam will not benefit from ISIS. Until all countries take a firm stand against terrorism, it cannot be wiped, he advocated.

BJP DK district spokesperson Sathish Prabhu and former Beary Sahitya Academy president Rahim Uchil were present.
