Bullet tankers begin transporting LPG as protest subsides on 5th day

Mangaluru, Jan 2: The five-day old strike by bullet tanker drivers at Katipalla, on the outskirts of the city appear to have ended with tankers transporting gas out of Mangalore LPG Import Facility being operated by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., at Katipalla on Saturday.

A HPCL official said that 360 loaded tankers transported the gas till evening on Saturday. As many tankers had already been loaded with gas and were awaiting drivers. Another 100 tankers were set to move out late in the night on Saturday, he said.

But the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), which was supporting the strike by drivers alleged at a press conference that drivers were forced to report for duty by police and owners of tankers who arrived from Tamil Nadu.

Muneer Katipalla, president, State unit of the DYFI, alleged that the police removed the tent erected by protesting drivers and the tanker owners also hired the services of drivers who came from Tamil Nadu for transporting gas. He alleged that police lathi charged some protesting drivers and arrested them.

But a police official denied it and said that obstruction for transporting LPG which was an essential commodity, would affect many. Hence, the police took some protesters into preventive custody.

The drivers were in protest against the alleged murder of a tanker driver and assault on its cleaner, both from Tamil Nadu, near Charalapalli in Andhra Pradesh on December 13. It was reportedly a road-rage incident. The tanker in question reportedly carried gas from Mangaluru.

Mr. Katipalla said that the association of tanker owners in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu should provide at least Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to the family of the driver who was allegedly murdered and the injured cleaner should also be compensated.

He said that those who allegedly killed the driver should be arrested.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

• Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

• Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

• Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
