Mangaluru, Feb 15: Around eight month long emotional and physical relationship between an unmarried Hindu couple came to an end with the arrest of the man, who refused to marry his girlfriend on caste grounds.
The accused is Sujith, a resident of Noojibalthila in Puttur taluk, who was working as an earth excavator machine operator in Bantwal taluk, where he had befriended a woman, a migrant labourer hailing from Bagalkot who was working at a stone quarry.
According to the woman, who lodged a complaint with police, for the past eight months Sujith was sexually exploiting her on marriage promise.
Recently, when the woman forced Sujith to honour his promise of marriage, he declined to do so, on the grounds that he is an upper caste Hindu and that she belonged to a lower caste of Hinduism. He reportedly told her that he would prefer to go to jail rather than marrying a lower caste woman.
The woman then approached the local police. Based on her complaint, a case under sections 417 and 316 of IPC and sections 3(1)(2), 3(2) of SC/ST Act have been registered in Bantwal Town police station against the accused. An investigation is on.
