Mangaluru, Nov 9: One would think that installing CCTV cameras in various parts of Mangaluru would largely bring down the crime rate in the city limits. However, this isn't so.
Hard to say, but there are 33 CCTV cameras installed at major traffic junctions in Manaluru City Commissionerate limits, although 12 of them are currently out of order. Out of the 21 cameras which are currently functional in the city limits, very few can be attributed as the reason for nabbing culprits in hit-and-run cases or chain-snatching cases.

From the year 2012, the crimes in which the culprits were nabbed through evidence procured from the CCTV cameras are few and far between. The culprits driving the respective vehicles in a hit-and-run incident of a store near the clock tower and another involving a pedestrian near Central Market were caught from the evidence recorded in the footage of the relevant CCTV cameras. Apart from these, the traffic police of Mangaluru city are yet to find the culprits in over 20 cases of hit-and-run accidents.
Even in incidents of chain snatching, the police have registered over 35 cases of chain snatching in the past two years. While several culprits have been caught in such cases, none were nabbed as a result of footage recorded on CCTV cameras in the city.
If cameras capable of recording high-definition footage had been installed, it would have been possible to catch few more culprits by clearly showing registration numbers of their bikes, say police sources. As it is, the footage from the currently functional cameras is hardly visible while recording during night hours or during heavy rainfall.

Citizens too, opine that there is a need for installing cameras with better clarity for recording as they would be helpful in getting visual evidence from the footage in crime scenes.
The installation of the cameras from Panambur to Thokkottu had cost the commissionerate about Rs 10 lakh, along with an additional Rs 10 lakh annually for their maintenance.
Clarifying on this, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner R Hithendra said that the dysfunctional cameras would shortly be repaired and put back into use. Additional cameras with better technology and clarity will soon be installed in 30 various junctions in the city limits, he added.
