Manipal, Jun 29: Three governments and a university are trying to cover up the gang-rape case of a Manipal medical student, according to a senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader.

Addressing presspersons here, GV Srirama Reddy, secretary of State unit of the CPI(M), said that the Centre, Karnataka and Kerala governments, and Manipal University were trying to cover up the case for some reasons.

In order to prevent Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy from visiting the victim, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University K. Ramnarayan had used the excuse that the medical student and her parents were not interested in talking to anyone, he said. “Can a vice-chancellor stop a Chief Minister from visiting a student?” he asked.

When Mr. Srirama Reddy himself led a delegation of elected representatives from Kerala, including M.B. Rajesh, Pallakad MP, P.K. Sreemathi, teacher, and T.V. Rajesh, MLA, to meet the student, they were told by the medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital and dean of Kasturba Medical College that the student did not want to meet anyone. “How does one know who she wants to meet?” he said.

The IGP (Western Range), Pratap Reddy, and Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah were repeatedly telling the press that the student was not giving a statement. He said the gang-rape was no longer a private matter, but a public issue.

The police should convince the student to give a statement. If she does not, then there are laws by which the statement can be procured. The statement is essential, so that such incidents do not recur, he said. He said though Manipal was a deemed university, it did not have a campus of its own.

The varsity is located in such a manner that it is difficult to demarcate public and private spaces; it is a porous campus. “Since the university does not have its own campus with a compound, the Union government should de-recognise Manipal University,” he said. “If the State government fails to investigate the case properly, the CPI(M) will demand a CBI probe.”

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
