The Christian community members thronged to the churches to celebrate the occasion. After fasting for many days, large number of followers attended the service.
The Milagres Church at Hampankatta, was the main venue celebration with a recorded rush thousands of people.
This day reminds everyone that one in this world can escape sorrows, and everyone has to wear a cross. While some are wearing visible crosses, most wear the invisible ones.
"This day has special significance in our religion, so we have come here to pray to Jesus," says Manjitha Paul, a teacher.
Devotees in the church were singing hymns in praise of Christ, who sacrificed his life for the sake of humanity.
"Jesus was crucified not only on a wooden cross. He also wore the invisible crosses, as he saw these not as punishments but graceful opportunities. The Easter season is the time for fun and games, especially for children, but for many adults, it is also an occasion of contemplation," says Anil Noronha, a shop keeper.
People also observe several long-standing traditions on Good Friday, one of which is fasting, with only one meal taken in the whole day.
The word Good comes from the word God Friday. In most countries around the world including India, Good Friday is a national public holiday. The rituals of this festival are distinct from those of all other Church observances and add to the holiday's considerable significance. The entire ceremony is sombre, with priests and deacons dressing in black vestments.
Good Friday services normally begin in the afternoon which is considered to be the likely time when Jesus Christ was crucified. Christians attend the mass and kiss a plank of wood which is in the shape of a cross. The three hour service is performed on this day in remembrance of Jesus Christ.
