Mudhol (Bagalkot), Nov 9: The Ministry of Home has handed over the investigation of the Mudhol communal riots to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Sleuths of the department visited Mudhol town on Saturday for investigation.
Communal riots broke out on the night of September 23, during the procession of Ganesh idols for immersion.
During the procession, some people allegedly threw stones at the procession, following which, as retaliation, a group of a particular community went on rampage by setting fire to houses and shops of another community.
According to the local administration, two houses, 40 shops and 21 vehicles were set on fire. Meanwhile, on Saturday, CID sleuths, headed by Superintendent of Police, CID, Vedamurthy, visited Janata Colony and met the victims, who had incurred loss during the riots, and collected details from them.
Speaking to media persons, Mr. Vedamurthy said that the government has ordered investigation to find out the truth and arrest those responsible for the incident.
He said that though the police have arrested some persons in connection with the incident, the CID may have to arrest more if required and interrogate them to establish the truth.
“The CID has constituted four teams that would be investigating all angles to ascertain the facts,” Mr. Vedamurthy said.
When contacted, Bagalkot Superintendent of Police Yuda Martin Marbaniang said that the CID probe has been directed by the government itself and the District Police has had no role to play in it.
He said that the police have arrested 117 persons, of whom eight have got bail as they have been found to be juvenile.
Meanwhile, the Anjuman Jamat of Mudhol, which wanted the government to hand over the case to CID, has expressed happiness over the decision.
“We can now hope of getting some justice to the victim. Though we were happy with the police investigation, the police had failed to arrest the main culprits,” said Noor Ahmed Hublikar, a member of the jamat.
