Mangaluru, Nov 18: A head constable of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) lost his life and four others suffered minor injuries when a heavy gate at the entrance of the New Mangalore Port Trust crashed to the ground on Thursday.
The victim has been identified as Eshwar Naik (55), who hailed from Vittal. He was residing at CISF quarters at Panambur. He is survived by wife and two sons.
According to CISF officials, the incident occurred near main entrance--- US Mallya Gate around 5 30 a.m. Due to maintenance work at the main gate, the emergency gate adjacent to it was opened on Wednesday evening. It was supposed to close before the dawn. As soon as the maintenance work got over at the main gate Eshwar Naik and four others went to close the huge emergency gate.
When the gate was almost closed, a hook supporting the gate came off and fell on the victim. While others managed to escape with minor injuries, the gate crashed on Eshwar. He sustained head injuries. Though a profusely bleeding Eshwar was immediately rushed to nearby hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Ramesh Naik, brother-in-law of the victim, in a complaint to the police, claimed that the tragedy was caused because of negligence on the part of NMPT management.
