Mangaluru, Sept 15: The Coast Guard district (Karnataka) headquarters on Saturday under the aegis of South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) coordinated the coastal cleanup drive as a part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) – 2018.
Volunteers from different sections of society and organisations took part in the cleaning drive. Beaches at Panambur, Tannirbhavi, Surathkal, Sasihithlu, Malpe and Rabindranath Tagore beach, Karwar, were among those cleaned. The participants removed waste and non-biodegradable materials including wrappers of food articles and plastic bottles thrown by tourists.
The cleanliness drive has created awareness among people, Deputy Inspector General S.S. Dasila, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka, who was present at Panambur beach in the city, said.
The Coastal Security Police, New Mangalore Port Trust, Central Industrial Security Force, Customs and Central Excise, school and college students, NCC Cadets, NSS volunteers and volunteers from all walks of life, including from Coast Guard Wives Welfare Association, Mangaluru, participated in it, a Coast Guard release said.
