Mangalore, Oct 29: The first shipment of building material to Minicoy Island (Lakshadeep) has commenced at New Mangalore Port Trust. M.V. PFS Prosperity berthed at the port on Monday to load building materials like gravel and manufactured sand.
The loading operation is in full swing and the vessel is expected to sail on Thursday. This is the first coastal movement of cargo to Minicoy from New Mangalore Port. Hitherto these cargo was moving through Old Port of Mangalore and other neighbouring ports.
M/s M.K. Shipping are the stevedores and C&F agents. The exporter of the entire consignment is M/s Export Marine Services, Mangalore.
The Ministry of Shipping has issued new guidelines under which ports will have to give priority berthing to dry bulk and general cargo coastal vessels irrespective of the origin and final destination of the cargo in order to save on fuel cost, to decongest railways, road transport and promote water transport.
Accordingly all 12 major ports have been directed to earmark exclusive berths and green channel for coastal cargo to promote the sector.
In this direction NMPT has initiated steps for promoting the coastal movement of cargo.
