Mangaluru, Jan 20: Protesters belonging to different organisations in Mangaluru on Wednesday claimed that progressive Dalit students are being insulted and targeted in higher educational institutions.

They also demanded action against those who abetted the suicide of research scholar Rohith Vemula of in Hyderabad Central University. Addressing a protest meet jointly organised by SFI, DYFI, DSS and PUCL in the city, federation of Indian Rationalist Associations (FIRA) President Prof?Narendra Nayak said filing sedition cases against some students in HCU is an act of vested interests. A complaint was filed against the students for conducting programmes opposing superstitions, he said.

Nayak said meritorious students, belonging to Dalit communities, in higher education institutions, are being insulted, after the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre.

This is the hidden agenda of the Sangh Parivar, Nayak alleged and added that ABVP has been executing the plan. The Congressmen are staging the drama of consoling the students, he criticised. He urged the government to conduct an investigation into Rohith’s death case. Rohith took the extreme decision only because of the caste and communal issues at the university, he claimed.

He said he has witnessed the atrocities against the students belonging to backward classes in Hyderabad University, when he had been there to deliver a lecture. So far, 23 students have committed suicide at the university. The caste-based discrimination is also prevalent in IIT, IIM and other institutions and this discrimination is a part of the conspiracy to expel Dalit and backward community students from higher education institutes, he charged.

Thinker Prof Bhoomigowda said people belonging to upper castes have been cheating the people of backward classes.

“Pejawar mutt seer has said the Dalits and other backward community people can take oath for salvation. But, Dalits do not need salvation after death. All that they need is equality and justice when they are living,” he said.

Dalit Sangharsh Samithi senior leader M Devaraj, PUCL leader P B D’Sa, DYFI?State Committee President Munir Katipalla, Karnataka Dalit Rights’ Committee District Convenor Lingappa Nanthoor and others addressed the protesters.

The activists of Students Islamic Organisation of India also took out a protest rally from Ambedkar Circle to the office of Deputy Commissioner where a protest meet was held on Wednesday evening.

Oh, All Dalits,

Be wise, as long as you are 2nd class Hindu, you will have no life with them.
Better there are God's religions, choose the best out of it where you have self respect, security, equality, and cooperation of your other fellow members.
When you join other secular religions, you are no more Dalit or no more 2nd class Hindu,

Again, be wise.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.
