Ban PFI, revoke decision to drop cases against its activists: Joshi tells govt

Mysuru, Mar 18: Continuing politics over the murder of BJP worker Raju in the city, two prominent BJP leaders of Karnataka have accused the state government of exhibiting Baara Khoon Maaf' (forgive even after 12 murder) attitude.

Addressing media persons State BJP president Pralhad Joshi said that the attitude of the Congress government has set an impression among anti-social elements that the government is in their favour'.

“Even after four days into the murder of Raju, not a single person has been arrested. Earlier, the government decided to withdraw 296 cases registered against Popular Front of?India (PFI) that again created a feeling, giving them a carte blanche,” he said.

Instead, he said, the government should ban the PFI and also revoke the decision to drop cases booked against its workers and order for a judicial probe, headed by either a sitting or a retired High?Court judge, into Raju's murder.

“If required, the probe should be handed over to the national investigation agency (NIA) as there is a suspected terror link behind the incident. The government should provide a job to at least one of the eligible family members of Raju,” demanded Joshi.

Shivamogga MP and BJP?national unit vice-president B?S?Yeddyurappa, said, “Following a series of unsavoury incidents in the past, it is established that Hindu community, that forms a majority, is in a state of insecurity”.

He appealed to Chief Minister?Siddaramaiah to call on the Raju's family and repose faith in them, as the incident has occurred in his home town.

Elusive bamboo shrimp resurfaces in Mangaluru estuary after 70 years

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
