The revision process which commenced on October 1 with handing over the published draft voters' list to representatives of political parties, will end with publication of the final revised electoral roll on January 10, 2017.

Deputy Commissioner K G Jagadeesha, who is also the district electoral officer said that voters can check their names and other details at designated locations across the district and bring to the notice of the respective booth level officers by October 31, if any correction or deficiencies therein.

The voters' lists will also be read out booth and part wise at gram sabhas, in urban local bodies as well as resident welfare association meets from October 7 to 14. A special campaign will be carried out for revision and assertion of rights at the booth level from October 16 to 23.

Objections received will be disposed off by November 30, Jagadeesha said adding the revised list will be published on January 10. The DC asserted that political parties have a major role to play in ensuring that the voters list is clean.

The summary revision is in addition to the continuous updation that the district administration takes up on a regular basis, he noted.

To get their names registered in the voters' list, the applicants can either apply at their respective polling stations or online at ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in. People can also get their names corrected if they are wrongly spelt or printed by submitting form 8 and other forms for a host of corrections approved by the ECI.

A voter also may submit his/her latest passport size photograph to the tehshildars in case the photo on the draft electoral roll is old, he said.

The administration has carried out a total of 4,24,662 corrections during the summary revision and the same is reflected in the draft rolls, DC pointed.

As on October 1, there are 16,23,847 voters in the district including 8,03,226 men and 8,20,621 women. Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
