The tricolor measuring 30 feet wide and 20 feet long was formally dedicated on Friday morning in the presence of B Ramanath Rai, minister for forest, environment, ecology and DK district in-charge and Nalin Kumar Kateel, Dakshina Kannada MP.

The flagpole has been erected in front of the terminal building near the car park area round the clock. The flag will flutter round the clock and will not be lowered at Sunset or hoisted at sunrise as mandated in the National Flag Code of India that has other strict rules too.

J T Radhakrishna, airport director, MIA said the project of erecting the tall flagpole and flying the national tricolor on it round the clock is part of a move by the ministries of home affairs and civil aviation to spur national feeling among the citizens and foster national integration.

"The Airports Authority of India has selected around 25 airports run and managed by it for the project and such flag poles and flags have come up on premises of half these airports," he noted.

The project at MIA premises was envisioned and conceptualized around August. The entire project has been commissioned at a cost of around Rs 13 lakh, Radhakrisha noted.

The flag will be tastefully illuminated at night with focus lights backed with UPS to ensure non-stop illumination. The flag will be visible to people from a distance of around 5-6 kilometres given that the airport is located on a hillock, Radhakrishna said.

Incidentally, the country has abundant examples of national tricolor being hosted on tall flag posts with a flag post that measures 303 feet to mark the second anniversary of formation of Telangana State believed to be tallest.
