Crackdown on protesters: 10 arrested for locking Milagres College gate

Mangaluru, Nov 4: More than a week after a group of students and their supporters staged a protest in front of Milagres College for alleged communal discrimination, police have arrested 10 persons. However, all of them have been released on bail later.

The collage had barred a total of 22 degree students from appearing for their semester examination on grounds of attendance shortage. Among them 21 are Muslim students including girls.

On October 27 a group of students backed by the activists of Campus Front of India briefly locked the entrance gate of the college to register their protest against the decision of the college authorities.

The protesters claimed that the College denied hall tickets only to Muslim students while a total of 90 students belonging to different faiths were facing attendance shortage. The police had managed to disperse the protesters.

However, based on a complaint filed by the college, the Mangaluru North Police have registered cases against 12 protesters including students.

The arrested have been identified as Abdul Hameed from Kunjathur, Sahil Ibrahim from Belma, Muhammed Zahir from Kudroli, Muhammed Ashfaq from Thumbe, Shahjahan from K C Road, Muhammed Shahid from Kotekar, Usman from Asaigoli, Muhammed Yusuf, Athavulla from Beltangady, Sheikh Ibrahim Sahil and Muhammed Riaz from Vittla. All of them were released on bail.

The police are reportedly hunting for two more accused, Muhammed Sinan and Yaser Arafat, sources said.

so they agree they had shortage..why give a bad name to your community when they are at fault..other colleges will think twice before giving admission to muslim students coz of this

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

• Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

• STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

• Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
