Mangaluru, Nov 13: Speakers at the crystal jubilee of Sunni Educational Development Committee (SEDC) of Karnataka raised their voice against uniform civil code, communal politics and called upon the Muslims to give more importance to education.
Thousands of Muslims including clerics and madrasa students took part in the half day event held at Nehru Maidan in the heart of the city on Saturday afternoon.
Addressing the gathering Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar, general secretary of All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, said that Muslim community will never accept uniform civil code as their Sharaih cannot be changed.
“In a country like India we need unity in diversity and not uniformity. We have different religions, castes and creeds. We should uphold unity. But, you cannot force all of us to follow a common civil code if our faiths and religions are not common,” he said.
Emphasising that Islam never encourages talak, he said that targeting the Muslim Personal Law by showing sporadic cases of misuse of triple talak is very cheap politics.
Several religious and political leaders belonging to different parities were on the dais. On the occasion industrialist and Janata Dal (Secular) leader BM Farooq was conferred with Sadhana Award by SEDC.
HD Kumaraswamy, State president of JD(S), promised on the occasion to raise voice in the Karnataka Assembly for justice for PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani.
The SEDC demanded the state government to launch a new scheme to provide pension to madrasa teachers.
