Mangaluru, Dec 17: An 18-year-old engineering student from Kerala, who tried to commit suicide by taking poison after being ragged by senior students, is battling for his life at a private hospital in Mangaluru.

Ashish, who had joined the course at the Kunhali Marakkar Marine Engineering College, Aluva, Kerala in August was allegedly subjected to ragging by five senior students in the college mess room on September 4 and had undergone treatment at a local hospital, said Mr Thamban.
The boy was again subjected to brutal physical torture by his immediate seniors on November 2, forcing him to return home and underwent counselling to recover from the traumatic experience, he said.
Ashish was contemplating to discontinue the course and had left home on a motorbike for nearby Payyanur where he bought pesticide and consumed before sharing a Facebook post mentioning the names of students responsible for causing undue mental and physical torture and extending gratitude to a few seniors who stood by him in trying times, Mr. Thamban said.
Interestingly, one of the students who subjected him to ragging hailed from Kalikadavu in Kasargod district and had recently faced disciplinary action from the college for ragging another student, he said.
Mr. Thamban, in an email message to the Kerala Chief Minister, the Director General of Police and the Vice Chancellor sought immediate action against the five students who allegedly ragged his son on the campus.
