Bengaluru: 8-month-old Pak boy donates bone marrow to save sister

December 19, 2016

Bengaluru, Dec 19: Eight-month-old Rayan from Pakistan is perhaps the youngest bone marrow donor in India. The infant saved his elder sister Zeenia's life. The girl who's almost two-and-half years old was suffering from Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare disease. Her bone marrow produced some abnormal cells, which would eat away the normal marrow cells. For Zeenia, the only cure was a bone marrow transplant.

It's been two months since Zeenia underwent a bone marrow transplant at Narayana Hrudayalaya and both the kids are doing well, say doctors. The family will soon be returning to Sahiwal, Pakistan.

Till the first 11 months, Zeenia showed normal growth. But soon she started getting high and persistent fever and antibiotics didn't help. On screening, she was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow ailment, manifested through high fever, low blood cell counts and liver and spleen enlargements, a condition medically considered life threatening. Zeenia was also diagnosed with partial albinism, which doctors said she had since birth.

The girl's condition came as a rude shock for her parents who were told by doctors in Pakistan that she was beyond cure. "Back home, diseases like Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis are mired in misconceptions. There is a perception that it's not curable. In fact, we had given up all hope till we heard about similar cases being taken up at Narayana Health City. We are glad that we could make this trip to India and are grateful to the entire team of doctors who saved our daughter's life," said Zia Ulla, Zeenia's father.

The child's condition had worsened due to recurring infection coupled with a long travel from Pakistan and she had to be first stabilised, before she could undergo the transplant. Her 8-month-old brother, Rayan turned out to be a complete Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) match for her. However, Rayan was just an infant and haematologists at Narayana Health had a tough task at hand.

"The case was very challenging from the donor's perspective; Rayan was barely 8 months old. An infant's bones are very soft and supple and extracting the stipulated dosage was a real challenge. It's risky to extract more than 15 to 20ml per kg of body weight at one go from an infant like Rayan. Therefore, we had to do in two steps with a time gap of six weeks between the two extractions," said Dr Sunil Bhat, senior consultant, head of pediatric hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant, Narayana Hrudayalaya.

"By using small marrow extraction needles, our team of anaesthetists could successfully extract enough bone marrow to cure Zeenia. Rayan who was put on iron supplements and adequate nutrition to make up for the marrow loss, has not only saved his sister's life but also become the youngest marrow donor in our country," said Dr Bhat.

"Once we return to Pakistan, we plan to start an online page and share our story with the people there. We want to create awareness about this illness and its possible treatment," said Zia Ulla.

HAPPY TO HELP

We are glad that we are being able to help a large number of patients from Pakistan as well as other countries by offering quality treatment. Just over a decade ago, two and half-year-old Noor Fatima from Lahore got cured of a congenital heart disorder here. And now it's little Zeenia. Our bone marrow transplant unit has completed more than 650 stem cell transplants till date

It is really a very good benefit for both Indians and Pakistanis if we both countries become a friends. We can extend our trade in Pakistan, similarly they can get all the benefit from India. The problem is in Pakistani side , their military and ISI is running parallel government. Our problem is hard core sangha pariwar group. All for power and politics.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
