Bengaluru, Dec 19: Indian American author and Hindu activist Rajiv Malhotra said the Modi government was likely to effect a sweeping change in its policy towards supporting the "grand Hindu narrative".

In a conversation with Manipal Global Education chairman TV Mohandas Pai at the Bangalore Literature Festival, Malhotra said: "The government is planning to make changes to the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research in 2017. ICSSR gets research funds that run into crores of rupees. Ever since it was instituted during Indira Gandhi's tenure, ICSSR has been under the control of Left-leaning intellectuals. This government will change this."

He is the founder of Infinity Foundation that seeks to promote Indic studies. The dialogue at the lit fest was: `India: Reclaiming Our Civilization's Heritage'.

Malhotra, who started Infinity Foundation to promote Indic studies, said the policy change would result in a change in the funding pattern for Hindu groups, which were looking to publicize the Hindu narrative.

He said the few pro-Hindu groups involved in constructing the narrative did not have much support. "But I'm hopeful of garnering the support of a silent majority for the project. The bigger challenge is to bring all the small Hindu groups together," he added.

The writer raised concerns about Googlisation and the increased use of Facebook and Wikipedia in India. "Many of our ministers who interact with me use the Google platform. They don't realize this is not secure, since such correspondence can be used for blackmail," he said. These websites and companies were under "foreign control", he added.

Threats notwithstanding, he said, social media remained the biggest platform to reach out to the younger generation and educate them about the history of Indian civilization."Instead of using these foreign platforms, IT capital Bengaluru should contribute towards building an indigenous forum," he said.
