Mangaluru, Dec 20: Thousands of hijab clad Muslim women from across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Tuesday got together in the city to vociferously oppose the central government's move to interfere in Islamic Shariah.

Speakers at the Women's Shariah Conference organised jointly by the various Muslim women's organisations of the twin district under the patronage of the Muslim Central Committee at Town Hall in Mangaluru, hailed Islamic Shariah as a boon for all the women.

The conference provided platform for Muslim women leaders of various organizations to express their views on uniform civil code and Islamic Shariah and concept of talaq in Islam.

“Shariah is neither oppressing us nor snatching our rights away from us. In fact Shariah is protecting us. It is the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led union government of India, which is trying to snatch our rights and oppress us,” said one of the attendees, who had recently converted from Hinduism to Islam along with her husband and children.

Addressing the gathering, Shahida Aslam, leader of National Women's Front, dubbed the Uniform Civil Code as just an electoral issue for BJP. “BJP raises the issue of triple talaq only for its personal gains and not because it has concern towards Muslim women, who are facing lot of other problems because of the incompetence governance o f successive governments.

Hailing the concept of unity in diversity, he questioned how can Muslim personal law can be a hurdle in the path of nationalism when there are different rules and personal laws for Hindus and others in India that are never discussed.

Mumtaz binti Samshuddin, leader of Salafi women's movement, said that even non Muslim men and women can follow shariah as it is the best way of life for mankind.

"Teachings of the Quran are a model not only for Muslims but to the entire mankind. Since Muslims themselves have not practiced it rightly, the government has gone ahead to make changes. Talaq which occurs step by step according to the rules is a blessing to women. If it is banned, the country will be in danger," she said.

Sabiha Fathima, sub editor of Anupama monthly magazine and representative of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said that Muslim women too had strived hard to implement Muslim personal law in undivided India before independence.

In India, this law is confined to personnel fields of Muslims such as Nikah (wedding), talaq (divorce), inheritance rights, adoption, alimony and wakf (endowment), she said reminding that Hindus and Christians and Sikhs too have their own personal laws.

Presiding over the convention, Zohara Abbas, vice-president, Muslim Mahila Sahitya Sangha, said that  the central government's plans of introducing Uniform Civil Code projecting the misuse of triple talaq exposes its anti-Muslim stand.

Why is this not on National news? Shameful for Indian media to suppress the voice of its second largest majority.
Also, reading the comments of ignorant people is very disheartening. India is becoming intolerant not just at political level but at the grassroots level now. Scary scenario for a country that has 20%of its population being subjected to oppression at all levels.

This shariah protection conference can also be called as uneducated women conference. But we need to protect Mangalore from such uneducated people.

Thanks CD for good coverage. Keep it up.

If we, Muslim women, gather in thousands to demand Shariah law, it will not be a news for national media. If a single prostitute with Muslim name demands uniform civil code it will be prime time news for national channels and lead news for national news papers.

Mashallah, Exellent gathering by muslim sisters and well organized by Muslim central committee. This is a tight slap on those who always used to ask why there are no muslim ladies protesting and they should know now that there were more than 5000 ladies who had gathered today to protest against PM and his party trying to amend our Sharia law. Nothing can stop us. Thanks to all the sisters who attended. Think if this was on a Sunday how many more would have attended. Mashallah.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
