Belagavi, Dec 13: The Akhil Karnataka Brahmin Mahasabha has strongly opposed chief minister Siddaramaiah's proposal to increase reservation in education and employment to 75%.

Citing the Supreme Court verdict that bars state governments from extending reservation beyond 50%, K N Venkatanarayan, president of the Mahasabha, questioned the government's intention of increasing the quota.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 9th Akhil Karnatak Brahmin Mahasammelan here, Venkatanarayan said that he was not against granting reservation to any community but was worried about its impact on the youth. He feared that any increase in quota will lead to a large-scale migration of talented people.
However, industries minister R V Deshpande supported chief minister Siddaramaiah's move. "There are legal hurdles to implement the proposal but I support it," he said, adding that the state government is mulling approaching the Centre with a request in this regard.
