Bengaluru, Feb 16: A five-year-old girl, who was allegedly set on fire by her 50-year-old neighbour last week, died on Wednesday.

arrested

A complaint was registered with the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) the same day.

Police had received a complaint on Saturday. The neighbour Suresh has been booked and arrested for attempt to murder. He is a security guard in a school. The incident took place after the child returned from an anganwadi.

“Her dress caught fire and she suffered serious burns,” sources said. Suresh wrapped her in a cloth and took her to a hospital. Police are trying to identify the motive behind the incident.

The child’s father is an autodriver and the mother is a domestic help. “In hospital, our daughter told us that Suresh asked her to get beedi and then set her on fire. His daughter and grandson were in the house when the incident took place. They are claiming that it happened by mistake. How can that be possible? We want justice for our child,” said Devi, the girl’s mother.

Neighbours allegedly told her that the incident occurred 15 minutes after the child returned from the anganwadi and went to Suresh’s house.

Victoria Hospital authorities, where she was admitted, said that she succumbed to 80 per cent burns. They checked if she was sexually abused on the request of KSCPCR chairperson Kripa Alva.

Arrest the culprit and give same punishment. He is not a human being. Victim should be given justice and her parents should be compensated fairly. Give capital punishment to the culprit which should be a lesson to others.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
