Udupi, Apr 27: The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders have finally managed to convince the controversial seer to prevent the split of Hindutva votes by withdrawing his nomination papers in Udupi assembly constituency.
Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami, the chief pontiff of historic Shiroor Mutt, whose controversial video clip had gone viral recently, was an aspirant of BJP ticket from Udupi constituency. However, when BJP fielded former MLA Raghupathi Bhat from Udupi, the seer had filed nomination as an independent candidate from the same constituency.
Mr Bhat had repeatedly urged the seer to withdraw the nomination and campaign for the BJP. A delegation of BJP and RSS leaders also had held discussions with the seer.
In a press release issued here on Friday, said that senior leaders of the BJP from the Centre had urged him to withdraw his nomination papers. Besides, he was impressed by various schemes and programmes taken up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre.
“In order to support Mr. Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, I am withdrawing my nomination papers,” the seer said.
