Bengaluru, Jul 17: Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Monday sought to clarify that his emotional outburst was not because of the Congress, but due to unhappiness that he was not getting enough support despite pro-people works.

“Media has twisted my statements,” Kumaraswamy told reporters in Ramanagara. “Despite financial constraints, I have waived Rs 40,000 crore of crop loans and I’m doing other pro-people works. There’s no pressure on me from Congress leaders and they are supporting me totally, including Congress president Rahul Gandhi.”

He said he would head the Congress-JD(S) coalition long so long as he was destined to. “I’ve joined hands with the Congress to serve people. This is a wish God has granted. I will run the government as long his blessings are there.”

Meanwhile, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dinesh Gundu Rao played down Kumaraswamy’s recent tearful outburst, calling it “a human expression of anguish.”

“There will be minor hiccups in a coalition government. I spoke to Kumaraswamy. He told me he got emotional. He did not speak anything against the Congress or any of the party’s leaders. He got emotional about the negative media coverage. We will sort things out. Let’s not discuss this too much.” Rao told reporters in Bengaluru. Last Saturday, Kumaraswamy shed tears and said that he was unhappy as the chief minister and was swallowing poison in the Congress-JD(S) coalition set up. This left many Congress leaders red-faced, with senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge saying Kumaraswamy was sending out a wrong message.

Rao also blamed the BJP for creating negativity. “Kumaraswamy’s expression was also on the way the BJP and its communal forces are attacking people and elected representatives in a demeaning manner,” the Congress leader said. “But it was a human expression of anguish at the difficulties he’s facing and he’s come around it.”

Meanwhile, Rao lambasted Union Minister Arun Jaitley: “We saw what the BJP did after forming a government in the J&K with PDP and then collapsing it to ruin that state. We saw what they did in Maharashtra and other states where they usurped power through unholy alliances in an anti-democratic manner. Here, the Congress and JD(S) came together on ideology. Jaitley should look into his own backyard.”

Naturals Ice Cream founder Raghunandan Kamath passed away following a brief illness. Born to a mango vendor in a village in Mangaluru, Kamath went on to establish Naturals, an ice cream parlour estimated to be worth Rs 400 crore today.

"Our thoughts on the sad demise of our patron and founder of Naturals Ice Cream, Late Raghunandan Kamath. Indeed a very sad and unfortunate day for us," the company said.

Mr Kamath grew up helping his father in selling mangoes in a village Karnataka's Mangaluru. This was when he learned the art of picking the ripe fruit, plucking it, sorting it, and preserving it.

As the legend goes, a young 14-year-old Kamath boarded a train from Mangaluru and came to Mumbai (then Bombay).

After working at his brother’s restaurant, Kamath had an idea — if ice creams have fruit flavours, why can’t they have real fruits. He decided to fill this void in the market. But unsure of whether customers would come, he began his business with serving pav-bhaji as the main dish and the ice cream as an add on.

His first ice cream parlour was launched in 1984 in Juhu, with the initial menu featuring around 12 flavours, each being a testament to the knowledge he acquired during the time he assisted his father in Mangaluru.

The demand kept growing and he opened five more outlets in 1994. Currently, it has over 165 outlets across 15 cities.

His story was captured expansively in ‘Intelligent Fanatics of India’, a book co-authored by Mumbai-based journalist Pooja Bhula.

Inspired by his mother's techniques, Kamath also developed innovative machines to streamline production and ensure consistency, notes the company website.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.
