Reckless truck kills 4 including politician, injures 20 others, damages 20 vehicles

Mandya, Oct 3: At least four persons including a local politician were killed and over 20 persons suffered injuries when a goods truck ran amok on the busy Guthalu Road near Benaka Samudaya Bhavana in Mandya last night.

According to police, the Bengaluru registration truck was transporting tender-coconuts from Bharathinagar to Mandya when the driver lost control over it around 8.05 p.m.

The deceased are Rafiullah, former member of Mandya City Municipality Council (45), Girijamma (48), Shashank (18), and Rahul (21).

Three persons died on the spot, as the lorry dragged them for a distance of about 250 metres and another succumbed to the injuries at the district hospital. According to sources, the driver was under the influence of liquor.

Those injured were rushed to Mandya Institute of Medical Science (MIMS) here. The condition of some of them is critical, said the police. Most of the victims were waiting for buses.

Eyewitnesses said that the driver did not bother to slow down even after hitting the pedestrians. He drove on for 250 meters, halted, jumped out of the vehicle and escaped into the darkness, they said. At least 20 vehicles, most of them two-wheelers were also damaged in the incident.

Health officials have shifted some of the injured to hospitals in Mysuru and NIMHANS in Bengaluru for further treatment.

Minor Irrigation Minister and Mandya district in-charge C.S. Puttaraju has announced ₹2 lakh compensation for families of each the victims. All the injured will be given ₹50,000 compensation and free treatment, he told presspersons.

Mr Puttaraju visited the accident spot and also the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) to meet the victims.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar, Mr. Razak Golthamajal, Mr. Sali Koya, Mr. Arshad Hussain, Mr. Ismail Balanoor, Mr. Feroz Bawa, Mr. Sahul Hameed, Mr. Abubakkar, Mr. Hameed K. Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support. The 9th Annual Day—EXCELLENTIA—was a memorable and successful event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
