In a petition addressed to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the MLCs have pointed out the party has to effectively counter the Opposition BJP in the Upper House.
Jayamala is a first-time member and she may not be able to defend the coalition government in the House.
The petition is said to have been signed by about 25 members, including S R Patil, K C Kondaiah, H M Revanna and V S Ugrappa. In fact, Revanna had openly opposed Jayamala’s appointment and demanded that a senior member should be leader of the House. The members had recently met AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka,
K C Venugopal, and appraised him about the issue.
Besides, the members have urged Congress president to give adequate representation to MLCs in the council of ministers. Of 22 ministerial berths available for the Congress in the coalition government, six are still vacant.
The party is likely to expand the Cabinet after the ongoing budget session of the legislature.
