Belagavi, Nov 24: The BJP and Congress members sparred over the proposed Rs 12,912-crore Yettinahole drinking water project in the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

In response to a query by Kota Srinivas Poojary (BJP), Water Resources Minister M B Patil said drinking water would be provided to Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga and Bengaluru Rural districts, at the earliest. With a majority of legislators from coastal Karnataka having given their consent to the project, works would be expedited he said.
Ganesh Karnik (BJP), however, took objection to Patil's claims, and said that he opposed the project “tooth and nail”.
He said the project was detrimental to the environment. He added that the Netravathi river was the lifeline of the coastal region. This angered MLCs representing the affected districts, who attacked the BJP on its dual stand on the project.
V S Ugrappa and H M Revanna (both Congress) demanded that Opposition leader K S Eshwarappa, who was caught in a fix as some BJP members favoured the project, clear his stand.
A verbal duel ensued creating a din in the House. As pandemonium prevailed, Council Chairman D H Shankarmurthy said he would adjourn the House if the members did not calm down.
