Puttur, Jan 3: Is Congress Party in communalism-stricken Dakshina Kannada district forming an alternative Hindutva organisation to check the strengthening of Bharatiya Janata Party, which is traditionally backed by the existing Hindutva outfits? If sources are to be believed, Bharatiya Hindu Parishad or BHP, said to be the brainchild of Congress leaders in Puttur taluk, will soon be a reality.

Even though Congress stalwart and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai denied any such development, sources within the party said that BHP will formally be launched on January 14 as an alternative to BJP backed Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

K Hemanath Shetty, the coordinator BHP, said the credit for the formation of such an organisation for the first time in the country goes to the Puttur unit of the Congress party, even though there will be no direct affiliation between the national party the local outfit. BHP is being formed with the main intention of uniting all Hindu party workers in Congress, he said.

'No Connection'

On the other hand, speaking to reporters at the sidelines of a programme in Mangaluru, Mr Rai clarified that the party had no connections with any such Hindu organisation.

"If any group of individuals forms a Hindu organisation together, it will not be a part of the party. The party members in Dakshina Kannada function as per the ground rules laid by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and there has been no attempt by Congress to form any Hindu organisation," he clarified.

Pejawar seer endorses

Meanwhile, Pejawar Mutt seer Vishwesha Theertha swamiji has expressed his willingness to lend support if a Hindu organisation would be formed by the Congress.

Addressing a protest demonstration organised by VHP and Bajrang Dal in front of the deputy commissioner's office in Mangaluru on Thursday, he alleged that the Congress government was implementing anti-Hindu policies in the state. If the Congress is forming a Hindu organisation, then they are moving on the right path, he said, presiding over the demonstration.

Stating that he was unaffiliated to any political party, the seer said that they (Hindu followers) would appreciate it if the Congress embraced the policy of treating all religions equally.
