Congress manifesto for 2014 elections promises inclusive growth

March 26, 2014

New Delhi, Mar 26: Expressing confidence that UPA will form the government again, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asserted that BJP 's campaign “balloon” will burst like India Shining ' in 2004 as he warned that Narendra Modi 's coming to power would be damaging for the country.

Mr. Gandhi, along with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cautioned that Modi 's ideology was against the idea of India and the Congress will fight in a determined manner to ensure that this ideology is defeated.

Releasing the party 's manifesto here, they debunked the opinion polls which are predicting a dismal show by the UPA in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and said everybody will be “surprised” when the election results come in.

On the upbeat campaign of NDA, Mr. Gandhi said, “just like the 'India Shining ' balloon exploded... I can say certainly the balloon will explode.”

He said this will be particularly true in Uttar Pradesh where 80 seats are at stake.

He said BJP has the ability of carrying out campaigns like India Shining ' but all should keep in mind that that campaign “evaporated” when the results came in 2004.

Attacking Mr. Modi, the BJP 's prime ministerial candidate, Mr. Gandhi said he had nothing against him as an individual but was opposed to his ideology which is against the idea of India. “Modi represents an ideology which is exclusive,” he said.

Mr. Gandhi was asked whether he agrees with the statement of the Prime Minister about two months back that Mr. Modi 's coming to power will be “disastrous” for the country.

Replying, the Congress vice president said, “the PM is a wise man and on most of the issues I bow to him. I tend to agree with his wisdom.”

He went on to add that it was not an issue of an “individual” but the “ideology which is questioning the idea of India. “Individuals may have personal likes or dislikes but the real danger is the ideology,” he added.

Mr. Gandhi debunked the opinion polls which project a dismal show for the Congress.“I frankly don 't have much faith in the opinion polls. In 2004 also, the story of Congress was over as per the opinion polls. In 2009 also, we were given no chance. But we got more seats. So, we cannot go 100 per cent by the opinion polls,” the Congress president said.

Mangaluru: Former MLC Ivan D’Souza on Monday led a delegation to the Passport Seva Kendra in Mangaluru, urging the authorities to provide basic facilities for applicants. D’Souza addressed the media, highlighting the lack of essential amenities at the Mangaluru PSK. “I have requested the authorities to provide basic facilities for people visiting the PSK.

There are no chairs for the convenience of people who arrive at the PSK. They are forced to sit or stand by the side of the road or on footpaths. Additionally, there is no parking facility, no washrooms, and water has not been provided for the public,” the Congress leader stated.

An average of 500 to 600 people from various parts of the state visit the PSK. They have to wait in the scorching heat of the sun, D’Souza mentioned, urging the govt to address these issues promptly. “Officials have agreed to find solutions to the problems faced by the people. Meanwhile, we have also demanded that the PSK be relocated to a more convenient space. We have suggested that the PSK could be moved to the old DC’s office, where there is sufficient space. If our demands are not met, we will hold a protest,” D’Souza explained.

Ashraf Kinara, vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada Waqf Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiment, stating that the authorities should either provide all basic facilities for passport applicants at the PSK or relocate the centre to a better location.

Mangaluru, May 20: In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a young man ended his life by stepping in front of a speeding train at Kolakadi railway gate near Mulky, following the tragic suicide of his beloved girlfriend. This sorrowful incident unfolded on Sunday casting a pall of grief over their families and the community.

The Victims of Love

The deceased, Kartik Poojary, a 20-year-old mechanic, had returned to his home in Molottu on Saturday after working in Chitradurga. Kartik lived with his mother and grandmother in Molottu, and had recently started working at a relative’s garage.

Kartik’s heart belonged to his collage mate Sharanya, 19, daughter of Harish Kotyan. Their love, blooming in their teenage years, faced the stern disapproval of their parents due to their young age. Although their parents had reluctantly agreed to their union through a legal bond to marry once they reached the appropriate age, fate took a cruel turn.

The Cruel Twist of Fate

In a sudden decision, Sharanya's parents withdrew her from college and sent her away to Moodbidri. Overwhelmed by despair and separation, Sharanya ended her life by hanging herself at home while her family was away on Friday. Her death was a blow too harsh for Kartik to bear.

A Grief Too Heavy to Bear

Kartik, shattered by the news of Sharanya’s death, hurried back to his home in Molottu on Saturday. The following morning, with his mother away in Kerala on urgent business, Kartik's grief culminated in his tragic decision. He walked to the railway tracks at Kolakadi and succumbed to his sorrow under the wheels of a passing train.

The Aftermath

The Mulky police, led by Inspector Vidyadhar, arrived at the scene and registered a case. The community is left mourning the untimely deaths of two young lives intertwined by love and separated by an unkind twist of fate.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.
