Udupi, Feb 17: Congress has been responsible for its own defeat in recent elections held in the country, not because it was defeated by others, said Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes.

Addressing Congress members at a members' meeting held in Rajeev Bhavan in Kaup recently, he said that the party encountered defeat since it was unprepared to face elections. "We failed to even make our achievements known to people while BJP and Modi had been misleading voters by making false promises of bringing back black money from Swiss accounts. This was the reason the party lagged behind prior to the recent elections. The people are more becoming aware they were misled," he said.

Speaking at the meeting, urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake

said that poor publicity of achievements and beneficiary schemes introduced by Congress government resulted in the failure of the party in gaining satisfactory results in elections. "The attempts of party workers in spreading awareness among voters on the party's achievements have been insufficient. There is more necessity of enticing voters by strengthening the party at booth-level," he said.

He said that MP Shobha Karandlaje was spreading false rumours that the state government was not keen on submitting proposals to the centre for grants. During the rule of UPA government, the centre had granted approvals to grants for over Rs 5,000 crore, he said.

Congress district president Gopal Poojary, former MLA U R Sabhapati, KPCC secretary M A Gafoor, Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, M V Mohan, Divakar Shetty, Sarasu Bangera, Vinay Ballal, Naveenchandra Shetty and others were present.
