Mangalore, Jun 23: Members of Mangalore City North Block Congress Committee staged a rail roko ' demonstration at Mangalore Central railway station here on Monday, protesting against the steep hike in railway passenger fares by 14.2 percent and freight fares by 6.5 percent.
Following a demonstration outside the railway terminal at Mangalore Central railway station, the demonstrators proceeded inside and staged a rail roko ' on the railway tracks in front of Mangalore-Bhatkal train for few minutes before the railway police ushered them away from the tracks.
Speaking at the demonstration, Congress leader Suresh Ballal condemned the hike in railway fares and said that the hike in fares by the BJP-led union government was an indication of the good days ' ahead for the people. Based on his promises of reducing the inflation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was voted to power by the electorates. However, the people of the country are facing sad days ' merely 22 days after Modi-led NDA government assumed power, he said, blaming the BJP for having let down the electorates who voted for them in the elections.
Demanding an immediate rollback on the railway fares, he lashed at union railway minister D V Sadananda Gowda and said that the latter had put a burden on the lower and middle class people of the country by increasing the fares. The NDA government is justifying the fare hike by putting the blame on the erstwhile UPA government, while there was no burden on the people during ten years of UPA rule, he said, adding that the hike was a contribution of the NDA government.
Congress leaders Vishwas Kumar Das, G A Bava, Lancelot Pinto, Denis D 'Silva, Radhakrishna, Jacintha Alfred, Sadashiv Amin, Namitha Rao and several others took part in the demonstration.
