Bengaluru, Jan 9: Hosaguddadahalli, the locality which witnessed mob violence on Wednesday after a class 2 girl alleged molestation by her teacher at a private school, remained incident-free on Thursday.

school riot

The area limped back to near-normality on Thursday though there was palpable tension, what with a huge posse of policemen deployed there. At least three DCPs, five ACPs, 15 inspectors, over 80 constables as well as personnel of the Karnataka State Reserve Police KSRP and the City Armed Reserve (CAR) were deployed to ensure order.

But shops within the 100-metre radius of the school remained closed. Prohibitory orders will remain in force till Thursday midnight in JJ Nagar, Hosaguddadahalli, Kuvempu Nagar and the surrounding localities.

Police have detained at least 15 people in connection with Wednesday's violence. They are also pursuing other people who reportedly beat up Ramakrishna, 49 ”the physical education teacher accused of molesting the child ”damaging the school property and indulging in stone-throwing. The accused teacher is still in hospital, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Labhu Ram said.

Police are examining the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the locality and their own devices. Besides, they are scrutinising the photographs published in newspapers in order to zero in on the rioters, a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, Home Minister K J George, along with Police Commissioner M N Reddi and Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar, visited the locality. The minister appealed to the residents to maintain peace.

The complaint

The girl's parents, in a complaint to the police, stated that on Tuesday, the child had returned home from school and told them that Ramakrishna had taken her into a store room in the institution and undressed her.

Thereafter, he tried to fondle her private parts. But she started crying and the suspect let her go, the parents said.

The police said the girl was subjected to medical examination and the reports were awaited. They further said they asked her a few questions œcasually but didn't get a convincing version of the incident. They will question her again as well as the suspect to dig out the truth.

At least 22 policemen were injured in the mob violence and admitted to several hospitals. Most of them were treated as outpatients and discharged. But constable Santhosh had to undergo seven sutures on the head as he was hit by a stone.

George visited the hospitals too and enquired with the doctors about the condition of the injured.

Meanwhile, K?Padmavati,?Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI),?Bengaluru South, said the jurisdictional Block Education Officer (BEO) had informed her that the school in question as well as other schools in Hosaguddadahalli had been instructed to remain closed till Monday.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
