Bengaluru, Jan 28: Ashoknagar police allegedly refused to allow actor Prakash Raj, who announced he will contest the Lok Sabha polls as an independent from Bengaluru Central constituency, to begin campaigning on Sunday, citing he had sent his representatives only in the morning to seek police permission.
Describing it as an act of cowardice, Raj posted a video on his Twitter handle saying, “To those cowards who are trying to stop us reaching citizens. Our resolve to ensure #citizensvoice in parliament just got stronger #bengalurucentral #2019 elections. Pls share n spread”.
He said some leaders and vested interests were trying to stop him. “It just shows how shaken they are and how they want to silence citizens’ voice,” he said. “Just spoke to the commissioner and solved the issue.”
Ashoknagar police said representatives of Raj approached them seeking permission to campaign in various areas, most of which were outside their jurisdiction. “Officers at the station suggested they get permission from the office of the DCP concerned,” an officer said.
However, D Devaraja, DCP (Central division), said: “I am unaware about his tweet. But there is no need for police permission to start an election campaign. No one can stop him and someone is trying to obstruct him. He can file a complaint with jurisdictional police.”
