Kannur, May 18: Independent candidate from Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency and former CPI(M) local leader COT Nazeer sustained serious stab injuries in an attack by a three-member gang at Thalassery on Saturday night.

According to police, Nazeer (37), a former municipal councillor in Thalassery and CPI(M) leader-turned rebel, was on his way to home on a motor bike with another person when the attack took place.

Police said he was targeted by a three-member gang that came on a motorbike at Kayyath Road in Thalassery around 7.30pm. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital and from there to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. However, the gravity of the injury is not immediately known as he was bandaged, said police.

Nazeer was named accused in the attack on former chief minister Oommen Chandy at Kannur in October 2013. He later parted ways with the party owing to various reasons, including the reference to religion in the party membership form.

In February 2018, he had even personally apologized to Chandy after visiting him in the Guest House here. He was even allegedly attacked by CPM workers at Meppayur on the last day of the election campaign.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
