Suratkal, Jan 15: Disagreement over betting between two friends in the local cricket team took a vicious turn, which led to assault over both by the opposing groups in Kulai on Monday.

Late on Monday night, when Ijaz Ahmed (21), a resident of Kulai, was on his way towards the local mosque to help in preparation for Eid Meelad the next day, he was waylaid by Anil, Devaraj, Sujith, Nikhil and others, residents of the same area, and allegedly assaulted with cricket bat and wickets.

Later the same night, Ijaz, along with his friends Rafeeq, Hafiyaz, Tauseef and few others from the local community, allegedly charged into Anil's house near Kalikamba temple in Kulai and assaulted Anil and three of his family members including two women.

Anil and his family members, who were injured in the assault, were admitted in a private hospital in Mukka, while Ijaz was admitted in a hospital in Mangalore.

Complaints have been registered in Suratkal police in connection with both incidents.

Following these assaults, a tense situation prevailed in Kulai on Tuesday, when a religious procession was being undertaken on the occasion on Eid Meelad. Alleging that stones had been pelted on Krishna Bhajan Mandir at Kulai, few locals gathered at the spot and began protesting against this.

Since the police had made security arrangements on Tuesday on the occasion of Eid Milad, the situation was brought under control and no untoward clashes took place thereafter.

Security was provided at the bhajan mandir and the local mosque to prevent further clashes.

Emergency meeting

On Tuesday evening, an emergency meeting was held in Suratkal police station in which local representatives of both communities participated.

In the meeting, Panambur ACP Ravi Kumar issued a strict warning to the locals not to spread untoward and baseless rumours in a bid to cause communal unrest in the town.
