Dalit bodies up the ante, want Parameshwara as CM

February 18, 2015

Bengaluru, Feb 18: The demand for a dalit chief minister grew shriller on Tuesday with a number of dalit organisations coming together to demand that State Congress chief G Parameshwara be made the chief minister.

Dalit bodies
As many as 34 dalit organisations, including Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS), Samata Sainika Dala, Madiga Dandora and Dalit Sena, held a meeting at a star hotel in Bengaluru to air their demand.

Consolidation of dalits took place a day after Congress leader Meira Kumar hailed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the city.

She had said that the post of chief minister was not vacant and that Siddaramaiah was sensitive to the grievances of dalits. Her open support to the chief minister is seen as a well-planned strategy by the supporters of Siddaramaiah.

Tuesday’s meeting unanimously decided to demand that the Congress leadership replace Siddaramaiah with Parameshwara. They want Parameshwara to be made the chief minister for the next two and a half years and they have set March-end as the deadline for the party to take a concrete step in this regard.

Dalit organisations coming together shunning their differences is seen as a significant development in the State politics. Several dalit leaders, including some in the Siddaramaiah Cabinet, had recently expressed their desire to see a dalit as the chief minister. But it is for the first time a group of dalit organisations have openly backed Parameshwara for the post.

It is speculated in Congress circles that Parameshwara is behind these organisations coming together.

The presence of one of the close aides of Parameshwara at the meeting only added credence to it. Retired IAS officers K Shivaram and Siddaiah also attended the meeting. Parameshwara’s term as KPCC chief ends in June this year.

These dalit organisations have set up the Dalit Mukhya Mantri Janandolana Action Committee to chalk out plans to mount pressure on the party in this regard.

“Parameshwara was defeated in the 2013 Assembly elections due to a political conspiracy. He should be made chief minister for the next two and a half years and Siddaramaiah should become the State party chief. It will be the real social justice,” N Murthy of DSS told reporters.

He said Siddaramaiah was a Ahinda (Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and dalits) leader, but a dalit leader such as Parameshwara too deserves an opportunity. The Congress will be wiped out in Karnataka if the demand was not fulfilled.

Dalits form 40 per cent of the State’s population and they would reject the Congress in the next elections if Parameshwara was not made the chief minister, Murthy warned.

KPCC?chief to meet Rahul Gandhi

Sources in the State Congress said Parameshwara will meet Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday in Delhi to apprise him about the ongoing membership drive and the political situation in the State. The KPCC chief had sought an appointment with Rahul, the sources said.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
