Mangalore, Jul 6: Shortage of police personnel at Belthangady police station in a naxal-affected zone was brought to the fore at the SC/ST monthly grievance meeting held at the office of Superintendent of Police here on Sunday.
At the meeting, Dalit activist L Shekhar raised an issue over acute shortage of police personnel at Belthangady police station pointing that the rate of crime was high in Belthangady and there were no sufficient number of police officers to handle cases. He requested the SP to urge the state government to depute more number of personnel to fill the void in the said police station.
In response, Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa replied that the efforts were being made to recruit more number of police officers to the district and the recruitment process for about 50 vacancies had begun.
Mr Sharanappa said that a proposal to set up a separate police station in the town of Dharmasthala and a traffic station at Bantwal had been sent to the state home department. If the proposal is approved, the jurisdiction of Belthangady police station will be reduced once a police station is set up in Dharmasthala, he said.
He also said that a traffic station at Bantwal will reduce the traffic jams in the taluk.
Irregularities in Belthangady brought to the fore
Mr Shekhar also alleged that a small Anganwadi was being run in the residence of a Dalit family in Venur village in Belthangady taluk on land that was allotted to him by the government, while he and his family were reduced to living under tarpaulin sheets in a makeshift dwelling nearby. He said that the Angandwadi was being run by officials of women and child welfare department.
The SP directed the concerned police officer to conduct an inquiry on the matter and submit a report in ten days.
Another Dalit representative brought to the notice of the SP the sale of Nitravet (Nitrazepam) tablets to citizens at chemist or medical stores in Belthangady taluk without prescription, which abetted them to commit crimes. Mr Sharanappa assured suitable action in this regard.
