Bengaluru, Feb 10: In a shocking revelation, Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara has said that a sub-inspector, who allegedly beat up a sand lorry driver in Gadag district, had also demanded a bribe from the latter.

The death of lorry driver Shivappa a day after he was beaten up by the sleuths attached to Lakshmeshwar police station had triggered a major violence.

Replying to a matter raised by BJP's Pradeep Shettar in the Legislative Council on Thursday, the Dr Parameshwara said that that sub-inspector Dayanand was following the lorry driven by Shivappa.

Parameshwara said Shivappa had not obeyed the sub-inspector's orders to stop the lorry. The sub-inspector finally intercepted the lorry and assaulted Shivappa. The driver had later assured the sub-inspector that he would give him Rs 40,000 the following day.

The incident happened on February 5. The driver went home and died at 6.30 am the following day. Enraged by this incident, a mob attacked the Lakshmeshwar police station.

The minister said the CID is probing the incident. After getting the report, Dayanand and police constable Ashok Pujar may be dismissed, Parameshwara added.

Shivappa's family had charged that he died because of police atrocities. The mob had set afire at least nine police vehicles in Lakshmeshwar of Gadag district.

The minister admitted that it has come to the notice of the government that tahsildars and officials of the transport department and public works are harassing people involved in illegal sand mining.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
