Mangaluru, Jul 28: Officials recently seized four pairs of deer antlers from United Sates-bound passengers at Mangaluru International Airport.

Forest department officials have booked a person under the Indian Forest Act, 1927 in connection with the case.
An airline staff had alerted forest department officials about two passengers – a woman and her father – heading to US via Bengaluru while carrying the antlers in his baggage.
V Karikalan, DCF, Mangaluru division, said the passengers were reportedly taking these horns to decorate the woman’s house. “We learnt that all the seized antlers were very old and used in their ancestral house, which the accused wanted to take to the US for decoration purposes,” he added.
After getting information from airport staff, a team of officials headed to the spot and seized the antlers. However, the passengers were allowed to fly after the necessary details were taken from them.
Karikalan said that the duo were reportedly not aware that it was illegal to carry or possess antlers. “Even if anyone has such items, he/she must take necessary permission from the chief wildlife warden. However, in this case, it was not illegal trade, but sheer ignorance on the part of the accused,” he said, adding that they have confirmed whether whatever details provided by the accused were true or not.
A team headed by the ACF visited the hometown of the accused in Hirgan in Karakala taluk to conduct spot mahajar.
