Dengue cases on the rise in DK, Udupi; nearly 700 tested positive

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 28: Contrary to claims by the authorities that dengue is under control, hospitals in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are recording a rise in the number of people suffering from the vector-borne disease. Nearly 700, positive cases have been reported from the twin districts from January till date.

According to Health Department officials, of more than 1,500 suspected cases of dengue reported in Dakshina Kannada alone from to July 2016, 335 have been confirmed as dengue. The deadly fever has claimed the lives of at least 16 persons in the district in the period of just two months, it is learnt.

In Udupi district as many as 350 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported in Udupi district in last seven months.

According to Dr Shrinivas Kakkilaya, who has been attending to a number of suspected cases, people should take precautions against getting bitten by mosquitoes carrying the dengue parasite. Dengue virus was being transmitted from one infected person to the other by the bite of the female Aedes mosquito that breeds in fresh water deposits outside the house.

Dakshina Kannada District Health Officer Ramakrishna Rao and District Disease Surveillance Office B.V. Rajesh said persons confirmed of dengue and those suspected of the viral infection were being given symptomatic treatment.

According to Udupi District Health and Family Welfare Officer, Dt Rohini, 186 confirmed cases of dengue were reported in June, while 51 confirmed cases were reported till July 26.

She said information was being disseminated in these areas that arecanut leaves and rubber plantation cups were helping in the spread of dengue and thus, should be disposed of properly. An amount of Rs. 42 lakh has been allotted for fogging activities.

Dr. Rohini said four rounds of fogging have been completed. Necessary equipment was being provided to the Taluk Government Hospital in Karkala and 1,166 persons were tested for dengue in the district, she said.

Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support. The 9th Annual Day—EXCELLENTIA—was a memorable and successful event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
