Mangaluru, Mar 19: Hundreds of Muslims in Uppinangady town, about 50 kilometers from here, staged a protest on Wednesday demanding the arrest of a college student, who for posting derogatory memes on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on Facebook.
Most of the Muslim shops remained closed in the town on Wednesday in response to the bandh call given by the Uppinangay Nagarika Kriya Samiti, a forum of local activists to fight against anti-social elements.
The agitators took out a march on the main street of the town before holding a protest meet. Addressing the protesters Mustafa Kempi, president of Uppinangady Juma Masjid, threatened to call for district wide bandh on Friday if the police failed to nab the accused by Thursday evening.
Former Zilla Panchayat member KK Shahul Hameed, PFI activist Seema Razzak also spoke. A large number of activists, local Muslim leaders and clerics also took part in the protest.
A case has been registered at Uppinangady police station against Adesh Shetty, a student of Vivekananda College, Puttur for uploading derogatory memes on the Prophet (pbuh) on Facebook portraying the latter as a rapist.
As precautionary measures, additional police force has been deployed in the town to prevent any untoward incidents or disruption of law and order.
