Bangalore, Mar 16: Former prime minister and JD(S)?leader H?D?Deve Gowda is learnt to have offered senior Congress leader C?K?Jaffer Sharief the party ticket to contest from Mysore Lok Sabha constituency.
Sharief called on Gowda at the latter 's residence and held discussions with him on Saturday. The meeting took place in the presence of former chief minister H?D?Kumaraswamy. The leaders are said to have discussed Sharief 's candidature from Mysore. Gowda is learnt to have pointed out to Sharief that he had every chance of winning as a JD(S)?candidate if he is able to consolidate the 3.5 lakh minority and 2.5 lakh Vokkaligas in the constituency.
Sharief told Gowda that he will convey his decision after returning from Makkah on March 23.
Speaking to reporters, Sharief said Gowda has always been fighting communal forces in his political career and he would lend his support to the endeavour.
Kumaraswamy expressed confidence that Sharief will join the JD(S)?soon and added that his entry would strengthen the party.
“The Congress has been trying to woo minorities from our party by false propaganda. Sharief has exposed it. His entry will help us play a larger role in national politics,” Sharief said.
If Sharief agrees to contest from Mysore on a JD(S)?ticket, he will be pitted against Pratap?Simha of the BJP. Sharief is sour that he was denied a ticket to contest from Bangalore Central which he had sought from the Congress leadership.
