Dharmadhikari accused of sexual harassment, life threat for property

Bhatkal, Feb 1: Investigation has begun in connection with a complaint lodged by a woman in Honnavar court alleging sexual, physical and mental harassment as well as life threat from her brother-in-law Maruthi Guruji, who is the Dharmadhikari at Shree Veeranjaneya temple at Bangaramakki in Gerusooppa in Honnavar taluk.

As per the directive of the court, police have registered an FIR based on the complaint lodged by Nayana Ramachandra Bhat have begun an investigation led by PSI Parameshwar in this regard.

It is said that Nayana had left her husband's home in Bangaramakki on November 3 along with her eight-year-old child. Thereafter, her husband Ramachandra Bhat, priest of the temple had lodged a complaint in Honnavar police station stating that his wife and daughter had gone missing.

During this while, Nayana Bhat had reportedly taken shelter at an Ashram in Bengaluru. She lodged a complaint against Maruthi Guru and her husband Ramachandra Bhat with the Inspector General of Police in Bengaluru on November 11.

Since there had been no follow-up investigation even till two months after she lodged a complaint with the police, Nayana approached the court and lodged a complaint against Maruthi Guru, Ramachandra Bhat and Kshema Lokare on several charges including sexual assault, life threat and land grabbing. Investigation has begun in this regard as per the directive issued by the court.

According to the complaint, Nayana had a property of 1.13 acre in Hulagari in Honnavar taluk and her husband had been forcing her to write over the property to his brother Maruthi Guru. When her husband was not at home, Maruthi Guru had allegedly threatened to rape her if she refused to turn over the property to him and also outraged her modesty by pulling her saree. Upon shouting out, he ran from the house. Nayana also stated in the complaint that she left for her brother's house the next day and proceeded towards Bengaluru where she took refuge at an Ashram.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
