‘Dissent is the essence of democracy’: Prakash Belawadi at Beacons-2018

Mangaluru, Mar 8: Beacons-2018, the two-day national level media fest of Nitte Institute of Communication commenced on Thursdayat the institute’s Deralakatte campus in the city.

The fifth edition of the fest, themed 'Dissent is Necessary' was inaugurated by Prakash Belawadi, renowned actor, theatre artist, journalist, activist and media personality. Dr C S Shastry, Principal, Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences presided over the inaugural ceremony.

In his keynote address, Mr Belawadi spoke of the necessity of dissent in democracy. Recollecting his days of journalism with The Indian Express, he said that regardless of the cynicism, it is a very noble profession. "Democracy without the right to dissent is no good, because dissent is the essence of democracy," he said. He urged students to question authority, think and find their own answers. "Protest has been made very convenient and we do not see the importance of dissent. 74% of India's population is below the age of 35. It is all up to the youngsters now," he said.

Mr Belawadi also spoke about the importance of theatre. He said it was an easy as well as a much more effective medium to approach the audience with a direct message as compared to any other medium.

Head of Nitte Institute of Communication, Prof. Raviraj Kini, Faculty Coordinator of Beacons 2018, Ms Wilma Serrao, Student Coordinators Pavan Kumar and Prabhat Shetty and Student Council President, Likhit Shanker were the others present.

The first day of the fest received a good response with fifteen colleges from around Mangaluru, as well as colleges from different parts of Karnataka, participating. Preliminary rounds of competitions like Just A Minute, Quiz and Photography took place, along with Short film making, Theme Dance, RJ Hunt and Movie Spoof.

The evening ended with a cultural program presented by the students of Nitte Institute of Communication.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
