Bangalore, Oct 25: Despite widespread campaign to avoid crackers during Diwali celebration, hundreds of people, most of them children, have suffered eye injuries in last three days across Karnataka.
In Bangalore alone nearly 60 children suffered eye injuries and are being treated at various hospitals across the city. The festivities were dampened by rain on Wednesday and it picked up on Thursday and Friday, also reflected in the steep increase in the number of eye injury cases.
Thirteen children were admitted to Minto Opthalmic Hospital on Friday and a hospital source said that seven of them had sustained severe injuries and were being treated as in-patients. This included two brothers Vinay Kumar (11) and Girish Kumar (13) from Chickballapur, who were injured while bursting crackers in front of their house.
Narayana Netralaya reported that 25 cases were reported at their facilities in the city, through the three days. Padmabhushan Dr. M.C. Modi Charitable Eye Hospital reported four cases through the three days.
Each year hundreds of cases of injury to the eye are reported almost from the entire length and breadth of the country and the majority of those injured are children.
