Mangaluru, Feb 11: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Aam Aadmi Party has strongly opposed the tariff hike proposed by the distribution companies in the state of Karnataka in general and Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited, in particular.

Reminding that the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) is constituted with a statutory duty to protect the interest of the consumers, he said that it is highly unfortunate that the consumer advocacy in KERC is totally defunct. The KERC has become a mute spectator to the bald, irrational and despotic tariff hikes ritualistically carried out every year, he said.
In a release, he stated that even when the distribution companies in the Karnataka have not filed any data or documentation, KERC routinely took up the tariff hike.
Even though the state is getting more than Rs. 5200 crores of power subsidy from the government of Karnataka for supply to the farmers, the companies are not bothered about the farmers and indiscriminate load shedding and intermittent power supply at abysmally low voltage are done, he said.
The AAP called upon the people of Karnataka to fight and expose these “glaring anomalies and irregularities and oppose resultant unscientific, irrational, illegal and despotic tariff hike”
Mr Rohan Shiri suggested that MESCOM should wait and watch as how electricity tariff will reduce in Delhi after the new govt. is formed as experts will work towards the same. Then MESOM can send and make a feasible study at Delhi and implement the same here, he said.
