In five years, five villages in the Dakshina Kannada constituency will be selected and developed as model villages under the scheme, beginning with a village in Sullia taluk. However, it has not yet been decided which village would be selected in Sullia taluk and the authority to make the decision will be given to the MLA of the concerned constituency, he said.

Sullia MLA S Angara said that it was an honour that the scheme would be first undertaken in a village in the taluk. With suggestions of the elected representatives of the constituency and office-bearers of the party, a committee will be formed to select a village under the scheme, which will be announced in ten days, he said.

PM Modi launched the'MP Model Village Scheme' on Saturday on the birth anniversary of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, who had struggled for the development of villages in rural areas. He hopes that a total of 800 villages in the country will become model villages in the project under which each MP will take the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in one village and convert it into a model village by 2016.

In the coming years, a village will be selected from Belthangady, Puttur, Bantwal assembly constituencies under the scheme. A village will be further selected in the rural region in either Mangalore City North or Mangalore assembly constituency for the development of its infrastructure, said Mr Kateel.
