DK, Udupi, UK to get saltwater exclusion dams for irrigation

Mangalore, Dec 3: Minister for Minor Irrigation Shivaraj Tangadagi announced that a new developmental plan had been sketched for the construction of Salt Water Exclusion Dams (SWED) at 77 existing vented dams in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts mainly to help with irrigation during the summer months and also to check entry of seawater.

Briefing mediapersons at a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that an exclusion dam had been constructed at the vented dam at Anjanapura in Shimoga district on a pilot basis and a similar one would be constructed at Senapura in Udupi district on a pilot basis within June, using new material called fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). A sum of Rs 12 crore approximately will be allotted for the constructed of each dam, he said.

Mr Tangadagi said that a total of 416 major and minor check-dams would be set up at regular distances in five districts in the state including Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Bijapur to harvest rainwater and increase underground water levels along the lines of a similar project undertaken by Rajendra Singh in the parched areas of Rajasthan.

Regarding the proposal of a new Lake Development Authority which would come under the purview of the minor irrigation department, he said that the formation of the body would be kept forward in front of the assembly so that eviction of encroached areas on the lakes could begin by the month of January.

Out of the total 26,850 lakes in the entire state, about 3,579 lakes will come under the ambit of the lake development authority. A campaign will be launched for the eviction of encroached areas once the body is formed in January, he said.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
