Doctors protest against rising violence against medical professionals

Bengaluru, Mar 16: Doctors from various associations such as the Medical council of India (MCI), the Karnataka government medical officers association (KGMOA) and the Association of Health Providers India (APHI) today assembled at Freedom park to protest against the atrocities faced by medical professionals in Karnataka.

Dr N Venkataramana, Vice President, BGS Hospitals condemning the attacks on private and government hospitals said " there should be objection to telecast movies and other television shows that show the profession In poor light.

Karnataka Home Minister KJ George and Dr. Ashwath Narayan C. N , MLA for Malleshwaram joined the protestors at Freedom Park to assure them that all steps will be taken to protect them.

George said that ''The government will not tolerate moral policing. Attack on medical professionals is a non bailable offence. I have already instructed the police commissioner and S K Patnaik, additional chief secretary, Government of Karnataka to look into the issue."

The intention of the protests was to draw the attention of the authorities to the problems faced by medical professionals.

Speaking at the event, Dr C N Manjunath, director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiac Sciences, said, "Our job is to provide appropriate treatment. Despite that if patients die, doctors must not be attacked. I appeal to the home minister to sensatise the department to ensure that the 2009 act which calls for protection of doctors is in place,".

He also added that recent studies have revealed that the average lifespan of doctors have come down by 10 years because of the stress they face at work.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
