Don’t bow to pressure from politicians; don’t seek favours from them: HDK to cops

Mysuru, Oct 27: Karnataka Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday advised the police officials not to bow to the pressure from Politicians and knock their doors for favours.

Speaking after receiving the guard of honour at the passing out parade of 34th batch of Deputy Superintendent of Police trainees at the Police Academy Parade ground here, he said that the police should carry out their responsibility of protecting the people.

"Don’t get pressurised under any circumstances from any one. Chief Ministers come and go, elected representatives come and go, but you remain in office till retirement and your services are vital. If you work honestly without making any mistakes, the state will be peaceful and government will always support the police forces for their honesty", he added.

He said that elected representatives and anti-social elements may try to bring pressure on you, don’t fall prey to such tactics. Your role is more important than ours in protecting society and the public. The state needs your honest workmanship.

He distributed awards to Probationary DySP Venkatesh who won the best rifle firing award, while DySP A R Sumit won the best revolver firing award. M Chandan Kumar won Home Minister’s Cup for best indoor performance. M J Pruthvi won the best woman outdoor performance. G Anusha won the best lady probationer Home Minister’s trophy. Probationary DySP Chandan Kumar received the best all-rounder probationary Chief Minister trophy, Chief Minister sword, DG and IGP batten and the Garudachar cash reward.

Director General of Police, Neelamani N Raju, Director of Police Training Padam Kumar Garg, Director of the Academy Vipul Kumar and others were present.

In all 36 trainees participated in the passing out parade led by Chandan Kumar Neelakanta.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

• Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

• STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

• Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
